Sophie’s Club Respite Center and Kid’s Spa has a mission to lovingly care for children with disabilities while their families enjoy a much needed rest from taking care of their precious children.
While visiting with us, families can relax and know that the needs of their children will be attended to by qualified, highly trained direct care personnel. Our Medical Director, Dr. Mary Schuetz will oversee all medical staff. A registered nurse will be available 24 hours per day. Feeding tubes, tracheostomy care, and medications will be dispensed and monitored closely. Children's communication differences will be clear and noted by all staff. Special diets will be adhered to. The ratio of children to staff will be 2:1, therefore providing the most attention and time to meet the needs of the children.
“Spa Treatments” available to our children will include massage therapy by a licensed massage therapist, music therapy, aromatherapy, manicures and pedicures. Activities including music, dance and various visual arts provide the children with a rich interactive daily program. Through these types of play and relaxation, children will learn more about themselves, peers, staff and the environment around them. Story time, puppets and drama are planned for an alternative to television. Our children will experience the regular routine of living in a home environment. Participation in food preparation, when appropriate, will add to the sensory experience of taste and interactions with staff and peers.
As the weather permits, outdoor activities include walks, playground time in our fully adapted playground, gardening, wagon rides, gathering sticks/pine cones/leaves for art projects, water play, sand play, snow play, listening to the birds and watching wildlife. The outdoor time is not only a fun break from the regular routine in the center but a learning experience of the world that was created for us.
